First Abbey Visit Checklist

Timed entry, steep stairs, and a nave that rewards showing up prepared.

The abbey is the reason many people come—and the place where unprepared visitors lose time to ticket lines and stair surprises. Use this checklist once; reuse it every return trip.

Before you go

  • Book a timed entry slot for summer and coefficient weekends.
  • Save ticket PDF offline; signal is weak in stone.
  • Wear grippy shoes—~350 steps between village and cloister level.
  • Check CMN reduced fares if you qualify (EU under-26, etc.).

Ticket partner: abbey ticket booklet. Full hours: abbey guide.

Inside — minimum 90 minutes

  1. West terrace for bay orientation.
  2. Nave and Gothic choir.
  3. Marvel of the Western World (abbey church upper levels).
  4. Cloister and refectory.

Rush visits skip the cloister—do not.

Audio guide or not?

Official audio adds context on medieval life; skip it if you are tide-racing. Free village views do not require abbey ticket—see FAQ.

Pair with tides

Schedule abbey entry away from peak esplanade flooding if you want both interior and bay theatre. Tools: tide calendar · Visit Planner.

Accessibility note

Steep stairs limit wheelchair access to upper monument levels. Families: who's visiting. Summer queues: beat summer crowds.
