Mont-Saint-Michel's highest tides are famous. So are the myths. Here is what actually happens on coefficient days in 2026—and how to plan around the show without missing the abbey.

What "high tide" means here

Tidal range in the bay is among Europe's largest. Coefficient (roughly 20–120) scales the height of high water. Above ~90, photographers chase the "island" effect. Between about 70 and 90, you still get strong tides without the rarest surge days.

Spectacle: esplanade flooding

On the highest tides, seawater can surround the rock and briefly cover the esplanade near the entrance—typically for roughly one hour around peak high water. Waves may splash the lower walls. It is unforgettable to watch.

Official access for ordinary visitors remains via the modern bridge and footbridge year-round. You wait out wet paving; you do not need a boat. folklore about "marooned" tourists belongs to the pre-bridge era.

What does not happen

  • The village does not close for ticket holders during high tide.
  • The abbey does not suspend hours because of coefficient alone—only standard closures (1 Jan, 1 May, 25 Dec).
  • Unsupervised bay crossing is never safe—quicksand and racing water are real.
