What to Pack (and What to Leave Behind)

Your feet and your abbey ticket matter more than another souvenir tote.

Mont-Saint-Michel punishes the wrong luggage. This packing list assumes abbey tickets booked and ~350 steps ahead.

Footwear

Grippy walking shoes with support—not fashion sneakers on wet cobbles. Rain makes the Grande Rue slick. Flip-flops fail on the ramparts.

Clothing

  • Wind layer even in summer—the ramparts expose you.
  • Light rain shell; Atlantic weather shifts fast.
  • Small day pack instead of roller bag on the rock.

Documents & tickets

  • Abbey timed entry saved offline; signal fades in stone.
  • Parking QR if you pre-booked mainland parking.
  • Photo ID for reduced abbey fares if applicable.

Leave in the locker

Large suitcases do not belong on abbey stairs. Mainland CIT lockers (~€2) near Le Passeur—details in our directory. Rail travellers from Paris via Nomad: drop bags before the climb.

Nice to have

  • Water bottle; cafes exist but queues happen.
  • Small cash for lockers and tips.
  • Camera with secured strap; wind grabs gear.
